What it is
The Target Universe System is a structured method for finding the exact set of sources where your off-page signals carry the most weight, and ranking them so effort goes where it counts. It turns link building from a guessing game into a prioritised plan.
The problem it solves
Generic link building treats two links with the same authority score as equal. In reality, one might sit in the middle of your topical space and move your rankings, while the other does nothing. The Target Universe System maps the sources that actually influence your specific rankings and AI citations, so you stop paying for links that look good and do little.
The five stages
- Brand entity mapping. We define who you are and what you should be known for, so the target set is anchored to your real topical space.
- Competitor signal analysis. We study the profiles of the sites already winning your terms to see which sources carry weight in your space.
- Source universe identification. We build the full set of publications, sites and platforms that influence your rankings and AI citations.
- Source prioritisation scoring. We score each source on impact and acquirability, so the list is both valuable and realistic.
- Outreach and acquisition sequencing. We work the list in the order that produces results fastest.
How it informs link type selection
The scoring tells us whether a target calls for a guest post, a niche edit or a digital PR pitch. The method picks the tactic, so no single tactic is forced onto the whole campaign.
How it handles AI search signals
The same map identifies the publications and platforms that AI systems pull from in your sector, which is the foundation of our generative engine optimisation work.
What clients see
The prioritised target list, the reasoning behind each score, and progress against it in your monthly report. It usually starts from a backlink audit so we build on a clean base.
